Why is the Article 370 Movie So Popular?

The Article 370 movie got the attention of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who mentioned it while addressing a rally at Maulana Azad Stadium in Jammu.

He stated showing happiness:

“I have heard that perhaps a film on Article 370 is going to be released this week. I think your ‘Jai Jai Kaar’ (cheers) is going to be heard all over the country”.

Moreover, he also prompted people to watch it as it might spread the right knowledge about Article 370.

“I do not know what the film is all about but yesterday I heard on TV that a film is coming on Article 370. Good, it will be useful for people to get correct information”.

However, sadly a major portion of Indian Citizens don’t know what Article 370 is, why it was abolished in 2019 and what were its effects.

What is the Story of Article 370?

Article 370 was a temporary provision in the Indian Constitution that granted special autonomy to the region of Jammu and Kashmir. It was implemented for the unique circumstances under which the princely state of Jammu and Kashmir positioned India in 1947.

Let’s draw a clear timeline for a better understanding:

  • 1947:  After independence, the princely states were asked to choose either India or Pakistan. The Maharaja of Jammu and Kashmir decided to become a part of India under certain conditions.
  • 1949: Article 370 was added to the Indian Constitution, giving Jammu and Kashmir a special status and allowing it to have its own constitution. The state had significant autonomy, and Indian laws were applicable only in matters of defense, foreign affairs, finance, and communications.
  • 1954: A Presidential order extended Indian citizenship to the residents of Jammu and Kashmir. However, the state still retained considerable autonomy.
  • 1980s-1990s: Tensions in the region increased, and the special status of Jammu and Kashmir became a contentious issue. The region faced political unrest and insurgency.
  • 2019: The government of India, under Prime Minister Narendra Modi, took a historic step by putting an end to Article 370 on August 5, 2019. This decision took away the special autonomy of Jammu and Kashmir, dividing the state into two separate Union Territories: Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh.

The ending of Article 370 was a landmark but a controversial move, leading to criticism and protests. The government argued that it was done to integrate Jammu and Kashmir more closely with the rest of India and fasten development in the region. Critics, however, raised concerns about the constitutional and legal aspects of the decision and its potential impact on the region’s stability.
